In her elegant and insightful new paintings, Alberta artist Laara Cassells tackles the image of the generation dubbed ‘the intentionally disengaged’. Cassells juxtaposes images of youth and contemporary popular culture with a more historical portrait painting tradition, the equestrian portrait. Cassells celebrates, as she says, “both the disjuncture and the resonance between subjects and medium,” with acuity and flashes of humour.
